William “Bill” Duewel, 69, of Elgin, passed away May 29, 2019 surrounded by loved ones in Elgin. He was born September 26, 1949 in Elgin to his parents, Robert and Kathryn Duewel (Putnam).
Bill was a graduate of Elgin High School, Class of 1967.
Bill served his country during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973 as a Radio Operator on the USS Cayuga. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Combat Action Ribbon, and the Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation Badge, which was awarded to members of the USS Cayuga in recognition of their assistance to the Philippine people during a series of natural disasters.
He later became a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elgin Watch City Post 1307. Following his service, Bill worked as a carpenter for many years.
He married Mary Grisham in 1979 and together they raised three children. At home, Bill could always be found with his dog Grish by his side.
Bill was a lifelong Elgin resident and devoted local sports fan. He attended all his children’s sporting events, coached baseball in the Elgin Continental League and served as a volunteer Board Member for the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame.
Bill was active throughout his life, and never missed a day working out at The Centre of Elgin with his buddies. They often joked that the most important workout they did was lifting their coffee cups as they chatted over breakfast. Bill also enjoyed riding his bike on paths around town. On Sundays, he liked to choose a bike path near a church, so he could ride there for worship.
Bill always enjoyed volunteering in his community, and he could always be found at neighborhood and Fox River clean-up days. He also volunteered as a LIVESTRONG Mentor at the YMCA of Elgin and with the Elgin Lions Club for many years.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Kathryn; and his brother-in-law, Joe Goyer.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Mary Duewel; children Abbie (Matt) Eklund, Brad Duewel, Kyla (John) Brittain, and his loyal dog, Grish; sisters Ginny Goyer and Peg (Michael) Luebbing; and many nieces and nephews.
