Everett Eugene Woods, age 82, of Elgin, passed away at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin on August 21, 2017. He was born in Carbondale, IL on December 8, 1934 to his loving parents, Arnold and Beatrice Woods (Waters).
Everett served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy from 1952 – 1955, earning the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, China Service Ribbon, and U.N. Ribbon. He was a member of Elgin VFW Post 1307.
He later graduated from Elgin Community College with his Associate’s degree in General Studies and went on to work as an investigator at the Illinois Correctional Center in Joliet, IL. He was the first African-American Auxiliary Police Officer in Elgin. He took pride in his work and was an excellent provider for his family. Everett was a founding member of the Poor Boy Club, Mother Goose day care center, Head Start, past Chairman of the Elgin Civil Service Commission, and Chairman of the Elgin Housing Authority, founding member and President of the Elgin Black Scholarship Committee.
Everett accepted Jesus and was baptized at an early age in Carbondale, IL. In 1988, he re-dedicated his life to Jesus and became a founding member of Living Gospel Church of God in Christ in Elgin. He served as the church’s first Treasurer, founding member and Chairman of the Trustee Board, first Deacon and Chairman of the Deacon Board, Chairman of the Benevolence and Hospital Committee.
Everett met and married Charlene Whitworth in 1957 and from this union, one daughter was born, Rita Woods.
Everett later met the love of his life, Ella, in Elgin, and the two married on August 24, 1966. Together they shared nearly 51 wonderful years of marriage and raised a daughter, Michele.
Loved ones will remember Everett’s kind heart, caring attitude and compassion. He was a dedicated servant of God who lived the Gospel through service to others. He was also a sensitive man, who did not avoid showing great emotion through tears. Everett was also a jokester who enjoyed teasing loved ones, all in good fun. In his free time, Everett enjoyed spending time with friends and family and shopping.
Everett was preceded in death by his stepfather, James Logan Sr., stepson Michael Johnson and brothers Gilbert, Donald and Richard Woods.
Everett is survived by his loving wife, Ella Woods; his daughters Michele (William) Jones and Rita Woods; grandchildren Nicole Elam, Daniel and Alisha Woods, Julian Dawson; great-grandchildren Miracle, Alexis, Aniah and Amaryah; two great-great grandchildren; siblings Carolyn Sue Logan, and James (Lois) Logan, Jr.; sister-in-law Sonia Woods; special friend Ernest Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be 9:00a.m. until time of service at 10:00a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2017 at Living Gospel Church of God in Christ, 1515 Dundee Ave., Elgin, IL 60120, Pastor Walter Blalark officiating. Interment with full military honors to follow at Bluff City Cemetery, 945 Bluff City Blvd, Elgin.
