Douglas William Cunzeman, age 74, of Huntley, formerly of Des Plaines, IL passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on September 10, 2019. Douglas was born in Washington, D.C. on June 6, 1945 to his parents, Paul William and Marion Cunzeman (Brooks).
Douglas earned his Bachelor of Science in Aviation Engineering and worked as an engineer in the aviation and aerospace insurance industry for 32 years.
Douglas had a distinguished 33-year career in the U.S. Army, commissioning as a warrant officer in 1963 and retiring in 1995. He served as a Helicopter Pilot with 3 tours in Vietnam. He earned the rank of Chief Warrant Officer – 5 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
Douglas also earned the following awards: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Aviator Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam), and Air Medal with 20 Oak Leaf Clusters.
Douglas was devoted to his wife of 48 years, Darlene. Together they raised two children, Jon and Kara.
Loved ones will remember Douglas as a hard worker who often had three jobs. His favorite hobby was fishing. He also loved flying, camping, canoeing, and coaching football, baseball and softball.
Douglas is survived by his children, Jon Cunzeman and Kara Christine Cunzeman; siblings Paula Walker and Michael Cunzeman; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 5-9:00p.m. with Military Honors at 7:00p.m. Friday, September 13, 2019 at Symonds-Madison Funeral Home, 305 Park St., Elgin IL 60120. Visitation will continue 9:00a.m. until time of Funeral Mass at 10:00a.m. at St .Mary’s Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Rd, Huntley, IL. Interment will be private.
